Ma Haitao, a 33-year-old television repair technician at the Qingdao-based Hisense Electric Company, realized his dream of pursuing higher education at Qingdao Radio and TV University on April 10. He was awarded the honor of "Model Worker of Qingdao" in 2006.

Ma and his 39 classmates are all front-line workers from various industries in Qingdao, including drivers as well as textile, maintenance and construction workers. As they are all model workers at the city level or even higher, the class is dubbed "Class of Model Workers."

"Providing the model workers an opportunity to receive higher education is a well-deserved reward for their hard work," said Wang Faling, vice president of the Qingdao Federation of Trade Unions (QFTU). This is the first college-level class in Qingdao in recent years specifically designed for model workers.

The class will be divided into two groups. One group is for 16 workers who hold associate's degrees, and the other is for 24 workers who only have a high school diploma. They will study executive management for two and a half years, and their tuition will be paid by QFTU.

The university said that it will provide certain courses closely related to the model workers' daily duties, such as English and computer training, basic legal knowledge and individual and team management. Given that the workers all have jobs, the university adopts a flexible credit system and integrates e-teaching with face-to-face teaching, so the workers can make better use of their spare time.

"The title 'Model Worker' represents responsibility and tasks. We will not only be model workers but also model students. We will keep pace with the times, arm ourselves with knowledge and expertise and make greater contributions to China’s economic development," said Zhou Yujiang, Ma's new classmate who is a national model worker and a quality control supervisor at the Qingdao Aucma Electrical Appliance Company.
