The United Nations started conference on the least developed countries on Monday.

The 5-day summit is attended by about 50 heads of state and government as well as ministers from 75 countries.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon chaired the opening of the meeting. Turkish President Abdullah Gul was elected as chairman of the conference.

The Turkish president said that Turkey is pleased to host the conference and called the conference as the only major opportunity referring to the commitment to the least developed countries.

He said: "We can not turn blind eye to suffering of the least developed countries."

The conference will focus on the actions to be taken in the next 10 years, as well as studies aimed at a comprehensive and sustainable economic growth.
