BEIJING—Three Carrefour (家乐福) stores in Shanghai, three in Central China’s Hunan province and two in Southwest China’s Yunnan province have been fined 500,000 yuan ($76,000) each for overcharging customers.

A hearing(听证会) will be held to decide the final amount of the fines. Carrefour representatives will be able to respond to the charges at the hearing, according to regulators.

Two stores in Kunming, capital of Yunnan, were found to have cheated on prices for tea, rice, chocolate and other goods. Some of the items were charged at twice the label price, said an official of the provincial pricing administration. Three Carrefour stores in Changsha, capital of Hunan, were each fined 500,000 yuan by the provincial price bureau on Sunday for price cheating.

Carrefour China promised customers on Saturday that it will provide refunds of five times the difference between advertised prices and incorrect prices charged at cash desks, after it was blacklisted by Chinese authorities for deceptive pricing.

Chen Bo, spokesman for Carrefour China, apologized to customers. He said Carrefour China has established both short-term and long-term measures to resolve the issue.

After the retailers’ (零售商的) deceptive pricing practices were exposed, about half the respondents to an online poll(民意测验) said they thought the authorities’ poor supervision was to blame for the false pricing. Some 53.3 percent of those polled said a lack of market supervision encouraged retailers to “dare” to engage in deceptive pricing.

Some netizens said Carrefour’s deceptive pricing had taken advantage of customers’ trust in its reputation.

“Customers should look closely at the quality of goods instead of the brand of the retailer. The deceptive pricing by Carrefour teaches us a lesson,” a netizen wrote on an online forum attached to baidu.com.

The National Development and Reform Commission, China’s top economic planner, also urged authorities to step up price checks ahead of the Spring Festival, which falls on Feb 3 this year.

Some students get so nervous before a test that they do poorly even if they know the material. Sian Beilock, a psychology professor at the University of Chicago in Illinois, has studied these highly anxious test-takers. He says that when they worry, it actually uses up attention and memory resources which he calls ‘cognitive horsepower’ that students could otherwise be using to focus on the exam.

Professor Beilock and another researcher, Gerardo Ramirez, have developed a possible solution. Just before an exam, highly anxious test-takers spend ten minutes writing about their worries about the test. What the two researchers think happens is when students put it down on paper, they think about the worst that could happen and they reappraise(重新认识)the situation. They might realize it’s not as bad as they might think it was before and, in fact, it prevents these thoughts from popping up when they’re actually taking a test.”

The researchers tested the idea on a group of anxious college students. They gave them two short math tests. After the first one, they asked the students to either sit quietly or write about their feelings about the upcoming second test.

The researchers added to the pressure. They told the students that those who did well on the second test would get money. They also told them that their performance would affect other students as part of a team effort. Finally, those who sat quietly scored an average of twelve percent worse on the second test. But the students who had written about their fears improved their performance by an average of five percent.

Next, the researchers used younger students in a biology class. They told them before final exams either to write about their feelings or to think about things unrelated to the test. As a result, highly anxious students who did the writing got an average grade of B+, compared to a B- for those who did not.

What the experts have shown is that for highly test-anxious students, who do their writing intervention, all of a sudden, there is no relationship between test anxiety and performance. Those students most likely to worry were performing just as well as their classmates who don’t normally get nervous in these testing situations.”

But what if students do not have a chance to write about their fears immediately before an exam or presentation? Professor Beilock says students can try it themselves at home or in the library and still improve their performance.

Chinese New Year Traditions We All Can Celebrate

Lunar New Year has long been the most important cultural celebration on the Chinese calendar. And as the mother of two kids born in China, it’s also one of my favorite holidays. The fortunate occasion brings with it a lot of traditions all designed to pray for good fortune and keep away bad luck. But over the years I’ve found that even for those who laugh at superstition(迷信行为), Chinese New Year customs can bring a welcome sense of renewal to a seemingly endless winter. Ready to ring in the Year of the Rabbit with a fresh outlook? Here’s how to get hoppin’:

1. Clean Your House

The Chinese make sure to sweep every corner of a room to rid their homes of ghosts and bad luck associated with the old year. If negative spirits don’t lurk(隐藏) in your living room, chances are a layer of dust and dirt from dry heat and slushy boots does. Get a jump on your spring cleaning while the weather outside’s still frightful enough to keep you stuck indoors.

2. Get a Mini Makeover

In China, it’s customary to get a haircut and new clothes for the new year. The idea is that with a new look, bad spirits won’t recognize a person and follow them into the new year. I don’t know about you, but a little shopping and a brand-new dress do chase my bad spirits away every time.

3. Make Amends

Carrying grudges (feeling of anger) into the new year is a no-go according to Chinese tradition, so differences with family, friends, and associates must be settled before New Year’s Eve. If your shoulders are hanging down from the weight of a grudge or two, take the initiative (主动) to resolve them and take a delight in how much lighter you feel.

4. Pay Off Your Debts

Like grudges, old debts are a bad omen for a new year. No matter which calendar you follow, there’s no time like the present to settle any outstanding accounts and repay loans from friends and relatives. If your debt’s too big to pay off all at once, create a realistic plan for decreasing it and commit to making your monthly payments.

5. Spend Time With Your Family

In China, offices and stores close down for Chinese New Year and people spend days traveling to their hometowns to reconnect with family, feast, and simply enjoy the company of their loved ones. Remember last Thanksgiving when you promised your cousins that you wouldn’t wait until the next family gathering to get together again? Get out your calendar and pick up the phone.

67. Which of the following four statements is true according to the passage?

A. Both of the author’s two children were born in China.

B. All the Chinese will pay off their debts before the arrival of Lunar New Year.

C. A Chinese who does not get a haircut for the new year will surely be disturbed by spirits.

D. The readers have to wait until next Thanksgiving for the next family gathering.

68. What does the underlined phrase in Paragraph 2 mean?

A. Delay doing  B. Keep doing  C. Stop doing   D. Start doing

69. If you have differences with family, friends and associates, you should _________.

A. get a haircut and new clothes

B. sweep every corner of your room

C. take active actions to settle them down

D. let your anger be and it will get away in the new year

70. What’s the purpose of writing this passage?

A. To laugh at superstition of the Chinese.

B. To tell us how the author herself celebrates Chinese New Year.

C. To explain how the Chinese New Year Traditions came into being.

D. To introduce several Chinese New Year Traditions all can celebrate.

Paper is different from other waste produce because it comes from a sustainable resource: tress. Unlike the minerals and oil used to make plastics and metals, trees are replaceable. Paper is also biodegradable (可降解的), so it does not pose as much threat to the environment when it is discarded. While 45 out of every 100 tons of wood fibre used to make paper in Australia comes from waste paper, the rest comes directly from virgin fibre from forests and plantations. By world standards this is a good performance since the world-wide average is 33 percent waste paper. Governments have encouraged waste paper collection and sorting schemes and at the same time , the paper industry has responded by developing new recycling technologies that has paved the way for even greater utilization of used fibre. As a result, industry’s use of recycled fibres is expected to increase at twice the rate of virgin fibre over the coming years.

Already, waste paper constitutes 70% of paper used for packaging and advances in the technology required to remove ink from the paper have allowed a higher recycled content in newsprint and writing paper. To achieve the benefits of recycling, the community must also contribute. We need to accept a change in the quality of paper products; for example stationary may be less white and of a rougher texture. There also needs to be support from the community for waste paper collection programs. Not only do we need to make the paper available to collectors but it also needs to be separated into different types and sorted from contaminants(污染物),string and other items.

The four most common sources of paper for recycling are factories and retail stores which gather larger amounts of packaging material in which goods are delivered, also offices which have unwanted business documents and computer output, paper converters and printers and lastly households which discard newspapers and packaging material.

Once collected, the paper has to be sorted by hand by people trained to recognize various types of paper. The sorted paper then has to be repulped(再打浆)or mixed with water and broken down into its individual fibres. This mixture is called stock and may contain a wide variety of contaminating materials, particularly if it is made from mixed waste paper which has had little sorting. Various machinery is used to remove other materials from the stock. After passing through the repulping process, the fibres from printed waste paper are grey in color because the printing ink has soaked into individual fibres. This recycled material can only be used in products where the grey color does not matter, such as cardboard boxes but if the grey color is not acceptable, the fibres must be de-inked. This involves adding chemicals , water-hardening agents , frothing agents and bleaching agents. Before the recycled fibres can be made into paper they must be refined or treated in such a way that they bond together.
