Two students have become Internet superstars recently after a photo depicting one smiling with his teeth totally exposed and the other stretching his neck and gazing vacantly into the distance was widely circulated online, leading the duo to earn the nicknames of "Brother Buckteeth" and "Brother Lost," respectively.
In a telephone interview, Zhang Yong, a 21-year-old junior majoring in jewelry design at the vocational school of the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, told the Global Times that this photo was taken five years ago when he and Yu Zhenzhe, a 21-year-old junior majoring in animation design at Hangzhou Normal University, were first-year senior high school students in the same class at Hangzhou No. 7 Middle School.
Blessed with a particularly striking set of straight, white teeth, Zhang has long used his unique trapeziform smile to amuse his friends and classmates.
During a class break one day, one of Zhang's classmates asked him to make that pose for a photo, which also captures Yu sitting behind Zhang.
Both soon forgot about the photo and lost contact with each other after graduation from that school.
But on March 23 of this year, a netizen uploaded the photo onto Sina Weibo with the caption "Buddy, how could you be that funny?"
Overnight sensation
The amusing photo of Zhang and Yu has since attracted countless views and been widely circulated online, as well as served as the basis for hundreds of Photoshopped (PS) parodies made by netizens, who superimposed Zhang's and Yu's images over popular TV and cartoon characters and placed them against various backdrops, such as the Titanic. These PS versions have subsequently been viewed millions of times.
Zhang told the Global Times that overall, he's been surprised – in a good way – by his photo's reception.
He admitted, however, that some of the more exaggerated depictions popping up lately make him uncomfortable.
"They've put our heads on animals or on the shoulders of women, and I don't feel so comfortable with that," Zhang said.
Yu, on the other hand, said that he's not happy with the idea of his image being disseminated so widely.
Things took a more serious turn on April 5 when rumors broke online that Zhang had committed suicide due to the pressures of fame imposed on him since becoming Brother Buckteeth.
Zhang was angered by the news and changed his signature on renren.com, a famous Chinese social networking site, to say that he was fine and that the death was a rumor.
Since then the true identities of Brother Buckteeth and Brother Lost have been revealed, resulting in thousands of their fans "friending" them online.
