Cote d'Ivoire's internationally recognized president-elect Alassane Ouattara on Thursday announced a blockade around the residence of his rival Laurent Gbagbo who has been holed up in a bunker for some days now.

In his message to the nation, Ouattara revealed that the outgoing president was hiding in the bunker within his residence in the posh surbub of Cocody with heavy weapons and mercenaries.

Ouattara also said that the Cote d'Ivoire Republican Forces (FRCI, pro-Ouattara) had been joined by the Defence and Security Forces (FDS, pro-Gbagbo) to pacify the town of Abidjan and restore social order.

"Gbagbo's stubbornness had plunged the country in a serious security and humanitarian crisis," Ouattara noted.

"Despite my numerous appeals and those of the international community, the outgoing president never took heed of the African Union recommendations and he continued to multiply his acts of defiance and serious violations of human rights by killing civilians," he added.

Ouattara affirmed that this was the reason why the FRCI decided to intervene in order to protect civilians and re-establish legality in conformity to their mission.

Cote d'Ivoire has been going through tense moments since the FRCI who are supported by the UN and French Licorne forces, decided to launch an offensive against Gbagbo's strategic points including his residence.

The embattled president has continued to launch a resistance and has refused to sign surrender documents that would have ensured he relinquishes power and recognizes Ouattara as the winner of the presidential election.
