U.S. rapper and music producer Nate Dogg, who rose to fame from collaborations with hip-hop stars including Dr. Dre, Tupac Shakur, and his longtime friend Snoop Dog, died at 41, media reports said Thursday.

The cause of death or other details was not clear so far. But news reports said he suffered from ongoing health problems, including two strokes in the past four years.

Rod McGrew, his close friend and manager, said the death on Tuesday was unexpected and that the four-time Grammy nominee had been making significant progress in his recovery.

A number of rap musicians and other celebrities used tweets to mourn his death. Snoop Dogg said in a tweet: “We lost a true legend n hip hop n rnb. One of my best friends n a brother to me since 1986.”

Born Nathan Hale, in Long Beach, Calif., Nate Dogg made his debut on rap artist Dr. Dre's seminal 1992 album, “The Chronic.”

He was a rapper and producer on “Regulate,” with Warren G. The hip-hop single reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1994.

Nate Dogg also collaborated with Eminem, 50 Cent and Ludacris.
