The Russian Defense Ministry will buy light armor for motor-infantry units from a German company, RIA Novosti news agency reported Friday.

The Defense Ministry said that it would purchase light armor from the Rheinmetall Chempro company. The choice of a supplier was made after "lasting studies and tests," the ministry said.

First Deputy Minister of Defense Vladimir Popovkin said earlier that Russia's industry has not responded so far to the ministry's request to provide the armed forces with the armor of required quality.

"If they (domestic producers) will not provide us with armor, we'll look for possibilities to obtain western technologies," he said.

In November 2010, President Dmitry Medvedev criticized the Armed Forces for poor armor protection that the military had in combat actions. He said the protection has been "next to none."
