75% of black-necked cranes on earth inhabit Tibet08:27, February 23, 2011

The number of black-necked cranes increased from less than 160 in 1992 to more than 8,000 in 2010 in southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, accounting for three quarters of the world's total quantity, according to the regional forestry department.

The black-necked crane, a unique and rare highland species of crane, is now under China's state-level protection.

Tibet is the world's largest habitat for the black-necked cranes to overwinter and reproduce, so a number of nature reserves have been set up around their nestling place.

For example, Tibet's Lhunzhub County built the 96-square-kilometer Lhunzhub Nature Reserve for black-necked cranes to protect the wetland where black-necked cranes gather. And local residents are more than willing to share over 4,000 kilograms of wheat to feed cranes and other wild birds every year.
