Macedonian Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski has agreed to hold an early election more than one year ahead of schedule, news from Skopje reported Tuesday.

Lawmakers from the opposition party SDSM led by Branko Crvenkovski, Macedonia's former president, walked out of the country's parliament last month and called for an early parliamentary election.

"You have persistently asked for an early election, and you have it now, without delay, without buying more time. I urge you to come out for it," Gruevski told reporters on Tuesday.

Gruevski didn't give a date for the election, which will be set by the country's parliament. But it was reported it would be very likely to be held in coming June.

Macedonia held its last early parliamentary election at the beginning of June in 2008 after its application to join NATO was shelved because of Greece's objection over the name dispute.

Greece has been opposed to its northern neighbor using the name of Macedonia, arguing that the name implies territorial claims against its own northern province, also called Macedonia.

This time the opposition began boycotting the parliament and asked for an early election after a local television which leans to the opposition was shut down by the government over tax fraud allegations.

It is not known whether the opposition will accept the government's call because the opposition has set several conditions for an early election, including unfreezing the television's bank accounts.
