The fire from a natural gas pipeline explosion late Saturday night in northern Ontario has forced the closing of a portion of the Trans Canada Highway, local media reported on Sunday.

No one was injured in the explosion, which occurred around 11 p. m. about 170 kilometers northeast of Thunder Bay, in northern Ontario, CTV News Channel said.

The nearest town of Beardmore was partially evacuated for about an hour as Ontario Provincial Police and emergency crews fought to contain the fire.

A local policeman was quoted as saying that the blaze was under control though the remote location of the fire has made it difficult to put out.

Carl Pettigrew said that the highway will be reopened once the blaze is put out entirely, adding that local residents can feel the heat in their homes from the fire.

Pettigrew added that the cause of the blast remains unknown, as the police will not be able to investigate the scene until the fire is out.
