The New York Jets used a pair of two-play drives for touchdowns to take a17-7 lead over the Cincinnati Bengals after three quarters Thursdaynight in the conclusion to the Thanksgiving Day NFL tripleheader.

Touchdown plays of 53 yards by Brad Smith and 13 by SANTONIO Holmes gave the Jets the lead.
It took New York only two plays to go ahead after halftime. Sanchez hitHolmes for 16 yards, then utility man Smith used superb blocks by DustinKeller and D’ BRICKASHAW Ferguson to speed down the left sidelineuntouched for a 53-yard TD run.
The Jets’ defense followed with a three-and-out, but Sanchez gave itback with a terrible pass directly to linebacker Rey MAUALUGA. His11-yard return to the Jets 37 set up the Bengals in good shape, and theywere aided by a 15-yard roughing-the-passer call against James IHEDIGBOon fourth down.

But rookie Aaron PETTEY was wide left on a 27-yard field goal.
The Bengals quickly made another mistake. They forced a punt, but SteveWeatherford’s kick bounced off Andre Caldwell’s leg while he wasblocking and IHEDIGBO recovered at the Cincinnati 14.
Holmes, the Jets’ big-play receiver, took Sanchez’s pass over the middle for a 13-yard strike and a 17-7 lead.
The two scoring drives took 47 seconds and 48 seconds.
Cincinnati’s Carson Palmer shook off two second-quarter interceptionsand hit rookie Jordan Shipley with a 5-yard touchdown pass for a 7-3halftime lead. The Jets led 3-0 on Nick Folk’s 27-yard field goal whenPalmer took Cincinnati 63 yards, with a 25-yard screen pass to rookietight end Jermaine Gresham a key play. The Jets, who damaged themselveswith penalties throughout the first three quarters, were called for ahit on a defenseless receiver when Drew Coleman drilled Terrell Owensnear the goal line.

On third down, Palmer found Shipley right on the goal line for the score with 43 seconds remaining.
New York hurt itself with eight penalties for 64 yards. But, as has beenthe Jets’ strength recently, their hurry-up offense took them 43 yardson Sanchez’s three completions. With a second left in the half, Folk waswide left from 44 yards.
Jim Leonhard’s interception on a poor deep throw early in the secondquarter was the Jets’ first pick in seven games—their longest streakwithout one since 1979.

They used five runs by LADAINIAN Tomlinson for 28 yards, a 21-yard passto Keller and a 15-yard face mask penalty against cornerback JonathanWade to set up Folk’s field goal to open the scoring.
Cincinnati threatened following Bernard Scott’s 33-yard kickoff returnto its 47. The Bengals got to the Jets 28, but Palmer threw into triplecoverage and Antonio CROMARTIE intercepted.
The Jets routed the Bengals 37-0 in the finale last season to earn awild-card playoff berth. They went to Cincinnati and won the next week24-14, then advanced to the AFC championship game before losing toIndianapolis.

The Bengals haven’t been the same since, going from division winner toone of the NFL’s worst teams at 2-8. And the Jets used that late spurtlast season as a spark and currently are 8-2.
It was Cincinnati’s first Thanksgiving game; the Jets are 3-3 on the holiday and have lost their last three appearances.
