凡以汉字起卦，均平均而取，即平分一半为上卦，一半为下卦。如字数不匀或笔画不匀，即少一画或一字的为上卦，取天轻清之意；以多一画或一字的为下卦，取地重浊之意。
1、一字占：以部首或结构来分上下卦，左右结构者，以左为阳为上卦，以右为阴为下卦。上下结构者，以上为阳为上卦，以下为阴为下卦。以乾一、兑二、离三、震四、巽五、坎六、艮七、坤八之先天八卦之数来分上下卦。以两数相加除以六的余数来定动爻。比如意字，上为立，五画，为巽；下为一日一心，共八画，为坤；两数相加除以六，为十三除六余一，为初爻动。最后得出风地观卦之风雷益卦。
