第九章 关于长音短化与相对弱化现象

英语中有五个单元音的发音较长，带有长音符号： [i:]、[:]、[:]、[u:]、[:] ，另外还有八个双元音的发音也较长： [e]、[a]、[]、[]、[e]、[u]、[au]、[u] 。长音指的就是这五个长元音和八个双元音，其他元音称为短音。

有的元字组在重读音节中本来是应该发长音的，但因为某种原因将其短化为短音。长音短化为短音，可能是因为词的音节数目多需要控制词的音长，也可能是因为该词是个常用词，短化后读起来显得简洁一些。

相对弱化现象：所谓相对弱化不是指音节的重读与非重读，而是指元音、辅音本身有强弱的区别。如toilet读作[tlt]，其相对弱化读音为[tlt]，在非重读音节中[]音比[]音相对较弱，[]音比[i]音相对较弱，[j]音比[]音相对较弱。在重读音节中[]音比[e]音弱，如 English 读[nl]比读[en]弱；family读[fmli]比读[f:mli]弱。在辅音中浊辅音比清辅音弱，如 little读[ldl]比读[ltl]弱，of读[v]比读[f]弱。

汉字有四声的变化，英语的音节只有轻重、强弱的变化。有的是重读音节，有的是非重读音节。英语没有汉语四声变化那么复杂，但通过音节中某些音素的变化可以实现相对的强弱变化，这里所谓的“弱”指的是发音时用力“少”，送气“省”。这使得英语语音变化更加丰富。

语音的发展总是遵循简洁、经济的原则。多音节词、常用词的读音经常出现简化的现象，简化的方式往往是将本来应该发长音的音读成短音，或是将该读双元音的音读成单元音。本章没有提到什么规则性的东西，但所列出的长音短化现象、相对弱化现象很值得玩味。英语语音具有多变性，变化具有持续性，变化又总是朝着某种更合理的方向演变。了解这一现象可以使学习者解放思想，放下包袱，减轻学习中“怕错、求准”的心理负担，从而灵活地而不是教条地去学习英语。施教者决不可以拿一个“准”字来吓倒学习者，教师对这个问题的认识水平会影响到其学生学习英语的成本及效率。

元字组在非重读音节中的非弱化现象

元字组在非重读音节中会出现非弱化现象，即在非重读音节中仍按重读音节规则发音。也可以将这种非弱化音节理解为次重读音节。次重读音节出现在主重读音节之后，通常会省略次重音符号。例如：

Compare the pronunciation of at in the following two sentences:

I got up at/t/ six o'clock.

What are you looking at/t/?

In the first sentence, at is not stressed(prepositions, conjunctions, articles, pronouns and auxiliary verbs are not usuallly stressed). In the second example, at is at the end of the sentence, in a more important position, and so has the stressed pronunciation /t/. There are around fifty words like at, which have two pronunciations: a ‘strong form', in which the vowel is generally pronounced as it is written, and a ‘weak form', in which the vowel is pronounced with // or //. The weak form is much more common than the other; the strong form is only used if the word is specially stressed for some reason. Compare:

I was late./wz/

It was raining./wz/

Yes, I was./wz/

I must go now./ms(t)/

I really must stop smoking./mst/

Where have you been?/v/

We usually have dinner at eight./hv/(Have is the main verb in this sentence.)

Note that the contracted negative always has a strong pronunciation.
