When Charlotte Landwehr was 13 years old, she started feeding a group of stray cats living around her Beijing compound. But the more time Charlotte spent with her feline friends, the more she witnessed how difficult their lives were. The expat teen often saw cats fighting and kittens dying from starvation and disease. It made her realize that there are far too many street cats in Beijing. So, she decided to do something about it.
With the help of a neighbour, Charlotte learned how to catch the strays in humane traps and take them to the veterinary clinic to have them sterilized and vaccinated. Now 19-years old, Charlotte is still helping control the population of Beijing's street cats. She finds them adoptive families and raises money for their food and medical treatment by selling keychains, which she makes herself.
