Zhou Yongkang, a senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in charge of security, visited Shenzhen in south Guangdong Province on July 18 and 19 to study the preparations for the forthcoming World University Games (Universiade)

Zhou, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, said China has learned well about security issues from the major international events previously held in China and that knowledge will be applied to ensure safety for the Universiade.

During his stay in Shenzhen, the first special economic zone (SEZ), Zhou met with the Universiade's security force composed of members of police forces, the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), the Chinese People's Armed Police Corps (PAPC) and volunteers.

While visiting the major sports and logistic facilities, the senior official checked security measures and equipment and talked with individuals standing guard. He warned security officials and personnel not to overlook any details for the international sporting event, which will be held from August 12 to 23.

"The Universiade is a joyful gathering for university students all over the world, as well as for all Chinese university students and the people of Shenzhen," Zhou said.

On Tuesday morning, Zhou attended a televised conference during which he heard a report by the security headquarters of the Universiade and reviewed security posts around the city and offshore through a video-monitoring system.

The Shenzhen Universiade is another major international event following the Beijing Olympiad in 2008 and the Shanghai World Expo in 2010, Zhou said, addressing the conference. He called for a greater readiness for difficulties emerging during the Universiade and told security personnel to be gentle, polite and warm.

"The good image of the Shenzhen features prosperity, development, opening-up and generosity, and that of Guangdong and even that of China as a whole should be brought into full display," he said.

Wang Yang, the Party chief of Guangdong's CPC Provincial Committee, accompanied Zhou during his tour.
