  It's news which will come as no surprise to women struggling torise to the top in the workplace. Sexism is till rife and appearancecounts for more than ability according to a survey released Monday。

  Almost half of women questioned said the glass ceiling still existsand 44 percent said that a male colleague had even made aninappropriate comment about their appearance。

  The Marie Claire and everywoman survey of nearly 3,000 womenexposes the workplace as a battleground when it comes to pay, promotionand age. Almost half (46 percent) of the women aged 18 to 55 said theyhad experienced sexism. Of the 18 to 55s polled, 63 percent believe thata woman's age is more of an issue in the workplace than a man's。

  The questionnaire found that 78 percent of respondents said thatbeing attractive helps them to get on better and 60 percent think thatoverweight women are discriminated against。

  Many women (60 percent) think men are better at getting pay risesand over half (58 percent) believe they are losing out on promotions totheir male colleagues。

  Psychologist Ros Taylor said that the UK should follow in thefootsteps of Norway by introducing a quota system which insists that apercentage of staff in senior positions and on boards are female。

  However, more than half (53 percent) of those polled do not believepositive discrimination is the best way to ensure female representationon boards. When asked what would have

  the biggest impact on climbing the career ladder, it was beinggiven the opportunity of a mentorship that most women wanted and to workfor a female boss not a man (58 percent)。

  Two thirds of women (66 percent) believe mentoring is an essentialbusiness practice, yet most (72 percent) said no such scheme existed intheir work place and the same numberhave never been mentored。

  Trish Halpin, editor-in-chief of Marie Claire magazine, said: "Theresults of our survey with everywoman proves that there is a real needfor mentoring in the workplace and demonstrates the important role itplays in helping women to fulfill their full potential, launch thebusinesses and achieve even greater success in their careers."

  60 percent of those who had been in a mentoring scheme said it had a positive effect on their business。

  但是,超过半数(53%)的受访者并不认为正面歧视是确保女性出席率的最佳办法。当问及事业进步方面最大的障碍是什么时,58%的女性归结于没有期待的受训机会,以及为女老板工作的愿望得不到满足。

  2/3(66%)的女性认为培训是最基本的商业操作,但是大部分(72%)人称公司没有培训计划,而同样有72%者称从没有受训过。

  Marie Claire杂志主编崔西?哈尔平说:“我们同everywoman协同调查的结果证明了我们确实需要在工作场所有培训机会,而这一结果也展示了培训在帮助女性充分开发潜能、创业、在事业中取得更大成功等方面的重要性。”

  另有60%曾有机会受训的女性反应,培训结果并没有在工作中起到积极作用。
