The overall cost of a seedbox service really hasn’t changed all that much over the past 18 months, but what haschanged is what you can expect to get for your money. Providers thatoffer seedboxes with torrent limits are being left behind in favor ofmore robust (and affordable) solutions - with "slices" (VPSes) of aserver being a preferred choice among pro seedboxers. Here we review& compare 14 new seedbox providers including a seedbox with 50 GB storage, unlimited torrents, unlimited bandwidth for just $10 a month.

Ed. note:A few providers were purposely omitted from the list, such as thosewith bad reviews in regards to service (or non-service), multiple PayPaldisputes and/or potential scammers.

Provider: http://extremeseed.com

BT Interface: uTorrent WebUI (uTorrent via VNC also available)
Connection: 100 Mbit (shared & dedicated).
Price: Starting at $20/mo (£12 GBP), up to $135/mo.
Hard Drive Storage: 30 GB to 640 GB.
# of Torrents: unlimited for all accounts.
# of User/Box: Shared (9 max); semi-dedicated (2 - 4 users); dedicated (1 only).
Access To Files: FTP, with FXP available.
Setup Time: Varies (read below)
Monthly Bandwidth Usage: unlimited data transfer.
Provider/Host: Mostly Server.lu / Root.lu, with some OVH servers.
Watch out for: Setup time on dedicated servers; uTorrent VNC access is extra.

About: It’s not often you’ll find an unlimited-torrent, unmetered-bandwidth seedbox for £12 - the only complaint is that it comes with a smallish 30 GB storage. Extremeseedalready boasts in excess of 100 customers, and has seedboxes dividedinto three distinct groups (shared, semi-dedicated and dedicated), eachwith various sub-package options. If we were to pick the best valueoption, it would be their Shared Seeder C planwhich comes with 80 GB storage for $35/mo. Like any seedbox provider,it all depends on how much you’re willing to shell out.

Setup times: For dedicated packages they purchase the server afterthe order is processed, so setup can take two days or even longer. Butfor shared/semi boxes, "90% of the time, times can be from five minutesto seven hours" as mentioned in their FAQ.

Provider: http://bytesized-hosting.com

BT Interface: Deluge (default), rTorrent and uTorrent (optional).

Provider/Host: Obtrix / OVH
Watch out for: Setup fees on high-end dedis; small torrent limits on low-end shared boxes.

About: Seedstorm is an offshoot of Obtrix.net, and offers both shared and dedicated seedbox options. We recommend you avoid their shared boxes Storm 1 & 2, since these have limits on the # of active torrents (although additional torrents can be purchased for $1.50 each).

SeedManager: It’s best to go with either Storm 4 or 5 (starting at $35) or choose from one of their dedicatedmodels. It’s also worth noting that all seedboxes can be upgraded to a 1Gbit connection for $7/mo. These aforementioned accounts come with aunique SeedManager interface whereby TFlux, rTorrent or uTorrent can bechosen for the BT interface/client, as well as root access and otheroptions.

About: DediSeedboxoffers both shared and dedicated seedbox options, although you’ll bepaying at least $70/mo for a box with unlimited torrents. That said, $25isn’t bad for 10 active torrents and 50 GB storage on a uTorrent WebUIseedbox (with the option to add an additional 50 GB for $5). However, anrTorrent "slice" offers much more value than this, such as the providerlisted below.

Provider: http://varsbox.com

Access To Files: FTP
Setup Time: varies upon availability.
Monthly Bandwidth Usage: umetered (for 100Mbit); 20TB mo. (for 1Gbit)
Provider/Host: FDCServers.net - hosted in the U.S.
Watch out for: Nothing, highly recommended! Seeding to Waffles.fm is not available.

About: Smartshoppers know where the best seedbox value lies, and that’s in "slices"that are beginning to corner a fair share of the market. While muchmore affordable than purchasing a dedicated server, Varsbox slices are not ’shared seedboxes’, although resources on the server areshared. Where else are you gonna find 250 GB storage, unlimitedtorrents, unmetered bandwidth - all for just $35 a month? There’s eventhe option to purchase servers on a weekly rate (from $10 - $13).

Each VarsBox slice is itsown self-contained server, or VPS. This means that your slice iscompletely separated from the others on the server. It also means thatyou are guaranteed a certain amount of server resources, so you can restassured that your applications will always perform.

About: You’ll need to dig really deep into the wallet to obtain a seedbox at Dentoo with no torrent limits (it’s a TFlux box for €59Euros). Oddly, their other dedicated servers come with uTorrent butsince they couldn’t be bothered to install uTorrent with Wine on a LinuxOS, they pass along the additional cost (to you) for a genuine WindowsServer 2003 license. External (non-partial) reviews of Dentoo suggestgood customer service and great speeds, although we haven’t tested them.

OVH Resellers (with installed BT Client)

For those who want areliable dedicated OVH seedbox without the hassle of installing theirown BitTorrent client, here are two viable options:

Provider: www.dedicatedpros.com

BT Interface: uTorrent (WebUI and remote desktop/VNC)
Connection: 100 Mbit, up to 2 Gbit (dedicated, not shared).
Price: €40/mo and up.
Hard Drive Storage: 500 GB to 6 TB.

Watch out for: Setup fees

About: First and foremost, DedicatedPros is a true OVH reseller that offers nearly every make & model of OVH’s product line. But unlike most popular resellers, DedicatedProsoffers the option to use their own custom OS called "Seedbox Out of theBox" which includes uTorrent installation, FTP access and remotedesktop - all of which is included for free.

Bandwidth usage:As with many new OVH accounts (especially on Kimsufi’s) there’s aupload limit of 3 TB/month for all non-OVH traffic. Having said that, since an estimated 75% of all seedboxes are hosted by OVH anyways, itwill likely be difficult to exceed your monthly quota.

Provider: www.dedisales.com

BT Interface: uTorrent WebUI/VNC or TorrentFlux.
Connection: 100 Mbit & 1 Gbit.
Price: £10/mo to £85/mo (shared); £34 to £160 (dedicated).
Hard Drive Storage: 20 GB to 3 TB.
# of Torrents: 4 to 15 (shared); unlimited on dedis.
# of User/Box: Shared: 7 (for 100Mbit servers); 12 for 1Gbit servers). Dedis = 1 user.
Access To Files: FTP, HTTP.
Setup Time: depends on plan.
Monthly Bandwidth Usage: See "Bandwidth usage" in DedicatedPros above.
Provider/Host: OVH
Watch out for: High setup fees on all dedicated servers (except Kimsufi C-05G).

About:At last check, there were no available ’shared seedboxes’ to be found,or else they were all sold out. However as an OVH reseller, Dedisaleshas a great offer on a Kimsufi C-05G server for just £34 a month -which includes free installation of either uTorrent or TorrentFlux (yourchoice).

Good job, sharky. I haven’t seen one of these in a while… Nice to see that it’s back.

  2. 02   ?   diskoverload Says:

we compete well with all of these providers, and our plan is 15 bucks.

rutorrent + rtorrent, 100 gb hd, unlimited torrents.

  3. 03   ?   John Doe Says:

Ah Irony… FSF is back to promoting Seedboxes not long after their post about how users can block Seedbox IPs so to try to hoard upload for themselves. (which doesnt work)

  4. 04   ?   joe011089 Says:

you missed http://seedboxhosting.com. Thats where my seedbox is and its the best. you could perhaps get it cheaper but the biggest draw for me was instant setup.

  5. 05   ?   RaVeN Says:

Firstly, let me say that its pretty surprising that you missed out Feral hosting…. Heaps of people on TPS and other forums are using them, and they’re better value than probably all of the ones you listed here.

Secondly, about customseedbox, the guy who owns it is an Australian, and he’s been communicating with people on the australian forum whirlpool.net.au , from this page onwards: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1300442&p=10

Alot of people have gone with him, and none have had any problems. (check the forum yourself)
Im currently with him, and i can verify he’s a genuine seller, good communication etc, no scam. prices are in AUD (which is cheaper than USD), and service is damn decent.

  6. 06   ?   Thelen Says:

Cheers for the add, had no idea I’d gotten out there that much!!

Thanks Raven for the comment, I’m sure though most of these sites could be a scam, even if they look more real. The fact my site has obviously had some effort put into it (including updating some information based on FSF above comments) probably means it isn’t a scam

I’ve got 25 customers now, most of them Australian and from whirlpool.

No checkout yet because I haven’t had the time to look at paypal and some sort of account manager (too busy setting up servers and users lol).

Anyhoo, there are lots of other providers out there that provide much simpler services, but without the custom touch and ability to do things outside the norm. That is where my market is

Feralhosting.com is another awesome host, I have been with them for 4 months now and the slot has been up that whole time with no reboots or problems. They provide similar prices and offer great customer service too!

  7. 07   ?   Thelen Says:

Forgot to mention, servers are from OVH in France, torrents are unlimited except that you have only a certain amount of dedicated RAM, so that will limit the number/size of torrents more than the Fgbit /gbit connection will

  8. 08   ?   Murray Says:

Currently with customseedbox as well. Definitely not a scam, The cheapest and best provider out there

As someone else mentioned check out the whirlpool thread. Lots of people happy with customseedbox

  9. 09   ?   human meat Says:

even though I have a strict “never pay for bit-torrent” policy, I appreciate the heads up on good deals that can be had.

  10. 010   ?   Pipert Says:

I had ordered a small Kimsufi dedicated server from Custom Seedbox and it was setup very quickly, <2 hours. This is what i call good service and they are not a scam.

  11. 011   ?   Dasher25000 Says:

The golden deal seems to be Bytesized-hosting.com. But that is too good to be true so I am a bit suspicious about it.

  12. 012   ?   Animazing Says:

Thanks for mentioning Bytesized. To add the missing data; our servers are located in the Server.lu/Root.lu datacenters. But we are currently looking for new partnerships in other locations.
It’s also fair to mention that we do not allow publicly tracked torrents (ThePirateBay, OpenBittorrent and the likes).

  13. 013   ?   Thelen Says:

Animazing, how are you making money from this? Even as low as 6 users on the server won’t even cover your costs, and any more than 6 users will just give horribly low speeds as they will all on average it up.

Not criticizing you, if you are making money great! Just that looking at the server/root.lu stuff, I can’t imagine how you are making money while keeping service good

  14. 014   ?   Animazing Says:

    @Thelen
We are not making (much) money with our current plans, you are right about that. We are currently looking to create bigger slices with a few extra’s and ask a relatively higher price for those. Right now we just want to create a solid platform, with solid support and supporting software. We are a young company so give us some time

  15. 015   ?   Thelen Says:

Animazing, sure, that is my model somewhat too. I don’t make anything from my small plans (infact barely make the monthly cost), but the med/big should offset some of it, start making money in a couple months.

I look forward to seeing how your boxes handle uTorrent. My quad xeon 2.83 with 8GB and Gbit had some trouble handling more than about 4 at down/up of about 40MB/15MB (though they were configured badly), I’d love to hear how you do it!

Good luck in the seedbox business, fellow seedboxer

  16. 016   ?   zefyx Says:

I have been with SeedStorm for the last 6 months, no problems here!

  17. 017   ?   jake Says:

I’m with http://www.seedcafe.info, the Package 6 plan for 6 days. 2 hour setup. Should have gotten the unlimited bandwidth because I’ve uploaded about 230 Gb’s already. Otherwise good speeds, no problems.

  18. 018   ?   RapidServerz Says:

Here is another for you all, built on word of mouth and recently moved online

    Enjoy!

    Provider: http://rapidserverz.co.uk

    BT Interface: torrentflux b4rt
    Connection: 1GBit (shared). (max 10)
    Price: Starting at £10/mo
Hard Drive Storage: 10 GB upward
    # of Torrents: flexable on all accounts.
    # of User/Box: 10 MAX
    Access To Files: FTP
Setup Time: within 24 hours, usually less than 12
    Monthly Bandwidth Usage: Unlimited
    Provider/Host: varies

  19. 019   ?   iPeter Says:

TorrentFlux isn’t that popular nowadays. Real torrenters know that uTorrent is the way to go.

  20. 020   ?   lol@019 Says:

'Real torrenters know that uTorrent is the way to go.’

Umm, no real torrenters use rtorrent since its much more stable and faster.

  21. 021   ?   epicSEEDS Says:

We have been doing this for about a year coming this December. We strive in customer support and customizing - we will install any app you would like (firefox winrar etc) and are not completely in it for the money.

We also give free 24hour test accounts for anyone who just wants to see what a seedbox is like.

  22. 022   ?   bigsb Says:

bigsb uses utorrent through wine mot rtorrent

  23. 023   ?   dozee Says:

    @ thelen

that is done by using the newest version of WINE,anything lover than v1.01 will give you crap upload speeds.
    there u go problem solved.ill send u a bill;)

I can vounch for dentoo,I got their cheapest seedbox at about 15euros and tbh,ive never had such good speed for a shared 100/90 all the time 24/7.
And customer service has been spot on.

  24. 024   ?   Thelen Says:

@DOZEE, I’m running wine 1.0.1-1 what version do you use/recomend? that is debian stable btw…

  25. 025   ?   dozee Says:

well i used v 1.39 and i found anything under was no good with upload speed/download would go flat out.

  26. 026   ?   James Scholes Says:

Selling seedbox hosting with unlimited slots on shared 1 gigabit port for $15 per month. Transmission remote GUI access included, 5 TB BW cap on port so this is first come first serve as doing this to cover server costs. Email james[at]jls-radio.com if interested. Thanks.

  27. 027   ?   Thelen Says:

Ah yes. I struggled with that and went to ubuntu and seems to be better.

Its weird though, because it runs fine with 1 peer on gbit server, got 40MB/s both ways no problem :S

  28. 028   ?   Danny Says:

rapidserverz.co.uk is using a nulled version of whmcs.

    http://www.whmcs.com/members/verifydomain.php

How can you trust someone with your money who cannot pay $15 pm for a legal copy.

  29. 029   ?   Thelen Says:

  32. 032   ?   helper Says:

Do not use seedbox.cc they are terrible, i have used seedbox.me, xvirix, torrentswift and were all good, seedbox.cc is appauling, they are obviously capping there uploads, not 1 torrent in a month was i able to even get a 1:1 ratio.

  33. 033   ?   Macl Says:

    Thanks for your review FSF.

We have been in service for no more than five months. We now have reached over 250 clients and have over thirty severs.

Just to point out some misconceptions; we will release your seedbox within seven hours if you purchased it when slots are opened, guaranteed.

Our dedicated servers have changed and hence they are released within 24 hours to 48 hours after payment is processed and undertakes all fraud checking (which take 40 minutes.)

    Thanks again FSF.

  34. 034   ?   threedrules Says:

i have signed up with bytesized hosting, really great you 110gb space for 10 euros.
you have to join the notify list most of the time as they run out of hosts real quickly.

the rest is as stated above

  35. 035   ?   hawkemster Says:

I just got a seedbox a couple of weeks ago, and oddly enough, it was advertised as being unlimited torrents and bandwidth. I was very disppointed that after 2 weeks, that transfers seemed to have been capped, and got the reason as being as that ovh is shaping traffic ?

Kinda wonder about that. Anyone else been having problems with any suppliers running thru ovh that has experienced this ? It just seems to be a waste of invested money to not even break 200k upload speed on a 1GB line, During the first 2 weks, it was fantastic, but now now I get better rates coming out from my home computer, than I do my seedbox.

I am really starting to wonder about the truthfullness of seedbox providers..Especially when I was being told it’s be 2 weeks before anything would be done. Which basically shows me that unlike the unlimited statement, you may get capped

  36. 036   ?   Thelen Says:

Hawkemaster, thinking anything on the internet is truly unlimited is being insane. Unless you are paying on the order of $100 for 10Mbit, $500 for 100Mbit and $3,000 for Gbit, there is NO WAY they are unlimited. Having said that, I can understand the frustration with being capped and the like, but I would have thought it was obvious there is no way any seedbox provider can provide unlimited when their host doesn’t either..

Anyway, the recent rash of capping is due to OVH’s new year new shaping policies, and hopefully they will reverse them, otherwise a lot of seedbox business will either have to close or increase pricing a lot to make up for the shaping.

  37. 037   ?   hawkemster Says:

In regards to the comment about the provider at the top not offering unlimited, then by golly, DON’T ADVERTISE as UNLIMITED !! Not all providers go thru OVH…so lets face facts here…Providers need to be at right up with how they advertise.

It’s like when a provider boasts about 24/7 support, and takes forever and a day to respond, IF they even do…I have seen a few providers that are that way…and believe me that really sux, from the customer end.

Due to the fact that I just checked my upload speed on the 1gb line, and it’s moving at a whopping 33k…pretty pathetic for a 1gb line…what pisses me off though, are the providers that insist on advertising unlimited, but cap after a certain point. Basically I have 360 gbn of space, and a 1gb line that after 1 week is slower that a 2400 baud dial-up. Hell yeah, I am ticked off…especially since the provider made a comment about not being completely honest, or he would not be in business…To say that no providers are honest about what they offer, is possibly true…as there are honest business people out there. If not, they definitely would not be in business.

I have had seedbox providers before, and have stuck loyally to the ones that were not full of it. As a matter of fact, the first one I ever got, I was with for almost a year, until he decided to shut things down…IF someone is going to be a provider, with the economy the way it is, at least be honest with people. Don’t be full os sh**. I hate liars…..especially in the internet area…people know that if you do not stand behind what you offer, then get the hell out of the way. I don’t need a provider that says one thing, but does another.

If you are gonna cap at 3TB, then dammit, say so…don’t give the idea that oh yeah, unlimited transfers, and unlimited torrents…that’s bull sh**. pr at least let the people know they are going to be slowed after 3 TB…but what’s messed up, is not even the MINIMUM speed is besing seen right now. 33 kb for 8 runninng uploads does not 10 MB/s make. sheesh…dial-up is even faster…

    1. 99.99999999999999999% of business overstate things. It’s called marketing.
    2. 99.99999999999999999% of internet business overstate things even more, its called being competitive.
    3. As I said, there is no such thing as unlimited, especially not for only $7 per month (the price of one of the above providers). Thinking it is is just plain insanity.
    4. You have to wonder, why did your first provider shut down? Perhaps his reliability and all that was not making him any money… There is no point having a business if it doesn’t make you any money for your time and effort…
    5. Agreed that the minimum speed isn’t even being seen, but that is there to try to convey the level of server sharing that is going on. Without it, every 3rd email is “what bandwidth do I get allocated” blah blah blah.

  39. 039   ?   Thelen Says:

Forgot to say, 90% of seedbox are hosted with OVH.

Aside from that, all the rest aren’t hosted anywhere that offers unlimited either. The exception might be server.lu, but while they are perhaps less limited, they can cap at a much lower download than 3/10TB.

  40. 040   ?   NuCode Says:

As for 2400baud = That’s actually less than 2.4kbps which equals 0,3k/s. Just wanted to point out that terms are wrong

    Now as for unlimited offerings:
it’s true that real, SLA, business grade unlimited, unmetered connections go way higher than these rates. For example, here in Finland, 10Mbps unlimited, unmetered off-net location (not in a DC) SHDSL connection goes for atleast 250€ a month, 100M goes for atleast 750-900€ a month.

On-net location 100MBps Full-Duplex (direct ethernet, straight to backbone) costs around 650€ a month, and 1Gbps costs 1500-1600€ a month. Prices VAT 0% so add VAT 22% if you are individual and not a company ordering.

In US for example prices are just marginally cheaper.

Then there is the problem of the nature of internet: The other side might have slower connectivity, or mid-route is congested, and again speeds drop.

It’s insanely rare to see even a consistent 100Mbps on a 1Gbps line, without heavily diversified user geographic locations, or that they are locally. Hell, even using a regular 24Mbps ADSL2+ to 100% on a single stream is not given.

All that being said, there are some which offer very nearly unlimited, unmetered with only minor gotchas on cheap prices. These work because they are trusting the average usage is well below planned, ie. overselling by a big factor. The problem with OVH is that so many are using them for this exact purpose, therefore their connections are getting saturated, and they have to shape.

I always have been saying that OVH offers are bullshit, overrated, oversold crap. The constant dropping of limits and increased shaping just helps to confirm this.

I just endured something terrible when opting to try out http://www.seedstorm.com for a seedbox alternative to feral hosting. I can’t even start to properly articulate how atrocious their product and customer service was. Unless you are a deeply depraved masochist, do not give them any of your money for anything. I purchased the “storm 4″ package for $35 a month on a “100mbit” line, with supposedly only 3 users on the box total. The speeds for download with their torrent client weren’t bad but could easily be matched by a decent home ISP speed. The upload speed was very bad with the torrent app, but the shining moment of the gleam on the turd that they call a product came with FTP transfers. My current provider (feral hosting) let’s me transfer @ 200kb+ with 3 files moving at the same time (my home line is 20/2). Seedstorm’s speeds were comically bad. Hovering in single digit KB/s, with dips into the dreaded “worse than old school dial up” B/S land. When I complained about the speeds, I received a string of emails asking me to perform such tasks as trace routes from my PC, the IP address of feral hosting, screen shots to document my horrible FTP speeds, and several suggestions to rectify my problem such as trying a different port # with my FTP client with an “Just try this one more thing and if it doesn’t work we will give you a refund” attached to many of the emails. Finally I had enough and after my 15th or 16th email with them where I asked for a refund early on, I disputed with Paypal. They immediately suspended my account due to “lack of payment”. I asked what they meant, and I got this (actual quote) “Well opening a dispute means we don’t have the money which you sent us, so this results in non-payment…Also a violation of our TOS. So as of now your seedbox has been suspended and you will not be getting a refund for violation of our TOS”. I was shocked. They actually have a real racket going there. Purposely word your TOS to try and claim default of payment with suspension when someone wants a refund for such a crappy product, and then suspend them, keep the money, and then just point to your TOS.

AVOID THIS COMPANY LIKE PENAL CANCER!!

  43. 043   ?   anonymous Says:

Thelan…I understand the priciples of marketing, but let’s face a few more facts here…as tight as money is all over the place right now, people want to make an educated decision when purchasing a service from someone, especially on the internet.

I for one would not waste my time on getting a $7.00 investment for a seedbox….such as the seedbox.cc setup. Their boxes are obviously oversold….but at this point in time, I could probably get better transfer speeds from them than I am from my currect “Unlimited Bandwidth/Unlimited Transfer 1 GB provider. Lets face it…16 kbps is a very PATHETIC upload speed. Majority of the time with current 1GB provider, speeds are great…until the capping issue comes in, and I see myself with another $40 doorstop for another couple of weeks…all due to the fact that my provider doesn’t believe in being straight up with people, and likes to stretch things…marketing/sales techniques DOES NOT mean you don’t have to be honest about things. What ever happened to good old business integrity ?

Like it or not, honesty still goes a long way in business…at least for the ones that take pride in what they do…

Had a bad experience with Santrex which is still not sorted yet.

They advertised a server with a certain configuration etc… but when we paid for it hey said that it could not support Windows 2003 so we asked them for a refund four times via email etc… but they asked us to wait and give them a chance to try another server with 2003 installed on it. This we did because it was what we wanted, but it took over a week for them to set it up and even then it ddnt have windows 2003 on it it was another version that wa supposed to be better. They eventually gave us the details for the server but when we tested the speed of it on dowloads and uploads it was slower than my own home PC ffs!!
We showed them screenshots of the speeds and even screenshots from another persons seedbox as a comparison but they said it needed more tweaking. It took about 1.5 hours to unrar a 4gb file but on the other seedbox it took 10 minutes!!

We again asked for a refund but they said they would give us a free week of service because of the delay in setting it up. This was unnacceptable to us because the server was just too slow so we asked again for a refund, which they declined.
So we moved the payment via PayPal to dispute through it being not as advertised because it was not what we had ordered because the operating system was different and also the new server had a slower processor, they replied to paypal saying it was what we ordered and if we didnt stop the dispute they would cancel our service and we would never get a refund. So the claim is still going through PayPal and we are awaiting their decision.

Now we are looking for another server and have ordered one from Leasweb in the hope that it will be a more suitable service.

So if you want my advice, stay away from Santrex!!

This is just our experience so if you have had good service with them, good luck to you.
