South Sudan has become the world's newest nation, the climax of a process made possible by the 2005 peace deal that ended a long and bloody civil war.

Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon are among international dignitaries attending celebrations in the capital, Juba.

Sudan earlier became the first state to officially recognise its new neighbour.

The south's independence follows decades of conflict with the north in which some 1.5 million people died.

Celebrations in Juba began at midnight (2100 GMT). A countdown clock in the city centre reached zero and the new national anthem was played on television.

South Sudan became the 193rd country recognised by the UN and the 54th UN member state in Africa.

A formal independence ceremony is due to be held later on Saturday.

Southern Sudanese have started celebrating their independence from the north early Saturday morning, after the clock struck midnight Friday.

People in Juba, the future capital of south Sudan, played drums, danced and sang the soon-to-be national anthem of the world's newest country.

A grand official ceremony will be held at the Mausoleum of John Garang, a late leader of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement. Salva Kiir Mayardit is expected to sign the Transitional Constitution of the Republic of South Sudan and take the oath of office as the first president of south Sudan.

Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, UN Secretary General Ban Ki- moon and representative from the Arab League, the African Union and the European Union are expected to attend the ceremony.

During the referendum to decide the fate of unity or division of the Africa's largest country in January, nearly 99 percent of the voters approve the secession of the south from Sudan. The result was recognized by the Sudanese government and the international community, paving the way for the south's independence on July 9.(BBC/China Daily)

Chinese president congratulates on independence of South Sudan (Xinhua)

Chinese President Hu Jintao sent a congratulatory message to President Salva Kiir Mayardit Saturday on the official founding of the Republic of South Sudan and his inauguration as the first president of the country.

In his message, Hu sincerely wished the newly-founded country success on its path of national construction and development.

The founding of South Sudan is the common aspiration of the South Sudanese people and their own decision, Hu said, voicing hope that the new nation will become a positive force in safeguarding peace and stability and promoting common development.

South Sudan voted to secede from the north in a referendum in January, and the Republic of South Sudan was founded Saturday.

After friendly consultations, the south and the north reached agreements on the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement and the referendum results, opening up a new chapter in south-north relations, Hu said.

Though far apart, the peoples of China and South Sudan enjoy a deep traditional friendship and have the common aspiration to strengthen friendly exchanges, Hu said.

China respects the political system and development path the South Sudanese have chosen, he said. China also stands ready to establish and develop friendly and cooperative relations with the new nation based on the five principles of peaceful coexistence, the Chinese president said.
