Police in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province are in search of the owner of a tortoise that fell from the top of a 30-story building and smashed the windshield of a parked car on June 26.

“I just heard this smashing boom behind me before I saw anything,” said a witness surnamed Li. “Then when I turned back I noticed a huge hole in the car window.”

Li said he then ran to the car to find the poor tortoise prostrate on the front seat.

“It was fortunate it didn’t hit a person,” Li said.

The tortoise is about 20 centimeters long and left a 10-centimeter hole in the car windshield. The animal was injured in the fall, cracking its shell near the tail and suffering a scratch on its right front claw.

As about 240 households live in the building, police said it will take time to find the owners of the errant reptile and in the meantime hope for the best for the turtle’s recuperation.
