The number of Beijing’s missiles targeted at Taiwan is likely to reach 1,800 next year, despite improving ties between the former arch-rivals, Taiwanese media said Friday.

The Liberty Times newspaper cited a military intelligence report as providing the forecast.

Taiwanese experts have estimated that China currently has more than 1,600 missiles aimed at the island, mostly deployed in Fujian and Jiangxi provinces in the mainland's southeast.

The report followed comments made by Taiwan's top ‘intelligence chief’ Tsai Teh-sheng in March, saying that Beijing was targeting Taiwan with a "new type of powerful missile" known as Dongfeng 16.

"Its range is longer, and it increases the threat to Taiwan," Tsai said then, without giving further details of the weapon or the number that have been deployed so far.

The Pentagon said in an annual report to Congress last year that Beijing's military build-up against Taiwan had "continued unabated" despite improving political relations.

According to the report, China has the most active land-based ballistic and cruise missile program in the world. It is developing and testing several new classes and variants of offensive missiles, forming additional missile units, qualitatively upgrading certain missile systems and developing methods to counter ballistic missile defenses.

The report, dated last year, said the PLA was acquiring large numbers of highly accurate cruise missiles such as the domestically produced ground-launched DH-10 land-attack cruise missile and the domestically produced ground and ship-launched YJ-62 anti-ship cruise missile.

The most recent edition of the report mentioned by the Pentagon official said: “Beijing’s military build-up opposite the island [Taiwan] continued unabated.”

-----------“One American friend suggested that China remove or withdraw the missiles deployed across the Taiwan Strait along our southeast coast, I can tell you here, responsibly, that we only have garrison deployment across from Taiwan and we do not have operational deployment — much less missiles stationed there.” General Chen Bingde, chief of the general staff of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) said during his US visit.----------------
