Ebay has reinvented its China business by helping local companies sell to consumers overseas, according to the head of the online retailer’s operations in Asia.

Jay Lee told the Financial Times that cut-throat competition from local rivals, including Taobao, and entry barriers for foreign companies made China’s domestic e-commerce sector an unrewarding market for Ebay.

It drastically reduced its operations in China in December 2006 by handing Eachnet, its local consumer site, to a joint venture with Tom.com.

“Things are still structurally very difficult in China because nobody makes money,” said Mr Lee. “China is more difficult than all other markets because there are strong local players and the internet landscape is not entirely open to foreigners.

“You could compare it to the invisible trade barriers to foreign carmakers in [Japan] in the 1970s, but it is more than that. There are also political reasons [for China] to keep the internet under control.” He said investor enthusiasm for Chinese internet companies had led to a fight for growth, regardless of profitability, between e-commerce groups.

He added: “Over the past year it has been a free-for-all for funding, which has made the need for economically rational behaviour disappear. That is not a market we have to be in.”

Mr Lee’s remarks come after Google decided partially to pull out of China last year and as Facebook ponders a strategy for entering the country.
