Now I personally think the article is too dismissive of the carrier. The Vargyag/Shi Lang does show that the Chinese are experimenting with their doctrine and looking into how they are gonna expand their naval and strategic capabilities, but this specific carrier isn't a threat. If anything, its sad looking compared to other carriers in service.

A good article, but again like Chulo said, very short term. However, I wouldn't expect a PLAN on-par with the size or technology American, Japanese, or South Korean navies for quite a few decades.

Yes, I also agree that making a giant hoopla out of Shi Lang and having panic attacks just by mere virtue of China having a carrier is irrational and stupid. But dismissing it as inherently inferior to Western carriers (without any solid reasons) is condescending and mildly insulting.

Strategypage.com already reported that one another carrier is under construction (codename "Carrier F") and frankly I don´t think that PLA gives a damn about some attention.

A lot of people on this thread are much more knowledgable about carrier strategy than me but even I recognise that you have to walk before you can run. So, carrier wise, we won't have a great deal to fear from these events but China obviously isn't going to just stop here. It's been said here that others are in the pipline so, in ten or twenty years, it will be quite a different picture. When people talk about Chinese quality etc, it's a fact that the aircraft carriers currently under construction in Britain are being built using massive industrial crane's specially built and imported from..... "China".
