The Business Standard, May 26 – the chances that India changes the IMF rules and breaks the restraint are fading, because China has betrayed the rare BRICS solidarity over the IMF Chief battle. Business Standard says that on one hand, China announced the joint statement of BRICS to oppose another potential EU IMF chief, on the other hand China is secretly trading with France – China supports Christian Lagarde to IMF Chief, and as a pay-back, France would assure next first IMF Vice-Chief a Chinese. The article also shows several uncertain evidences.

But is China really the BRICS betrayer?

At least in the eyes of Voice of Russia, that is not the role China plays. Instead, VOR sees the IMF Chief battle China’s another challenge to the West’s monopoly in international affairs. If China agrees the trade, then why? The reason is that China believes the Europeans won’t allow a Chinese IMF, so it didn’t recommend any Chinese candidate. Therefore the tactic is adjusted in this way – collecting all the supporting votes from the developing countries for one single candidate. This tactic has helped China successfully win the Olympic bid and the World Expo.

For Wall Street Journal, whether China really supports Lagarde  remains unclear. If year, it would be a huge encouragement. But the question is – there is no evidence showing the China is supporting her. “China is playing Taichi”.

It is too early and too extreme to say that China is the betrayer of BRICS, let alone the "evidence" is not yet confirmed. The best way out is NOT hurrying criticizing member countries inside BRICS, but to team up and create a rational strategy for the IMF systematic reform. Even if the strategy could be out of usual expection, it is better to adopt an optimistic view and seek the chances out from the situation. Your thoughts?
