Experts: China should keep nuclear power policy stable

China should maintain a relatively stable policy for nuclear power development and further strengthen nuclear safety, said academicians from the Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) at a seminar on nuclear energy.

At the "Nuclear Energy Development" seminar sponsored by CAS and CAE, most of the 20 academicians agreed that China's nuclear power development policy should maintain relative stability without significant changes. Certain Western countries have announced that they will no longer develop nuclear power, and one important reason is that nuclear energy already makes up a large share of their energy supply.

However, nuclear energy still accounts for only a very small portion of China's energy. China will certainly place greater emphasis on security and draw on lessons learned from the accident at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan. Furthermore, it will change the approach from "actively developing nuclear energy" to "actively and steadily developing nuclear energy."

Academicians also stressed the need to further strengthen nuclear safety and nuclear energy research — especially related basic scientific research. They said that in addition to nuclear energy and nuclear industry, the Chinese government should also encourage people from other departments, industries and fields to study nuclear problems and mobilize the forces of the entire country — not just the nuclear industry.

Some academicians also proposed that China should learn a lesson from the accident at the Fukushima nuclear power plant and strengthen nuclear safety work. For example, the government can establish a special dedicated institute for nuclear safety because the country currently lacks one.
