China's Minister of Science and Technology Wan Gang said Saturday that security research is the key to safe nuclear power development.

Wan said during a press conference that China's current research on "third-generation pressurized water reactors and high temperature gas-cooled reactors" should be designed "in line with internationally recognized standards."

"Japan's nuclear leakage incident was the result of damage from earthquakes and a tsunami. Chinese scientists should draw a lesson from the accident," Wan said.

He said efforts should be made to monitor Japan's nuclear leakage more closely, and stringent security analyses should be conducted on China's nuclear power plants.

"More investment should be put into current research on nuclear energy," he said.
