An estimated 500,000 people visited cultural institutions into the early morning hours on Sunday during Serbia's annual "Night of the Museum", reported Radio Television Serbia (RTS).

This was the eighth such occasion during which 315 museums and galleries hosted 430 events throughout the country. On the "Night of the Museum" admission is free to the public.

In Belgrade, where more than 280,000 visits to 67 participating cultural locations were recorded, the public showed the greatest interest at the Ethnographic Museum, where masquerade costumes and masks were on display; at the Military Museum, where Roman soldiers forged swords; and for theatrical performances sponsored by the National Theater.

Outside the capital, an exhibit of Hungarian artists at the Museum of Contemporary Art and a modern graphic display at the Museum of Vojvodina in Novi Sad attracted the most visitors. In total, over 100,000 people lined up at 50 cultural venues in Novi Sad, the second largest Serbian city.

Elsewhere, in the central Serbian city of Kragujevac, visitors most frequented rock concerts at the Youth Center with its theme of urban culture. The official residence of the former Yugoslav leader Josip Broz Tito in Kragujevac was also open for the night.
