Another protest in Kandahar against the burning of the Koran

Afghan protesters angered by the burning of a Quran by an obscure US church killed up to 20 UN staff, beheading two foreigners, when they overran a compound here today in the worst-ever attack on the UN in the country.

At least seven foreigners, including four Nepalese guards and a Swede, were among the dead, officials said. The Swede was identified as Joakim Dungel, a 27-year-old UN worker.

The nationalities of the other foreigners killed were not announced till late tonight. Romania’s foreign ministry said preliminary information suggested a Romanian citizen was among the dead.

Five protesters were also killed and around 20 wounded.

The attackers took out security guards, burned parts of the compound and climbed up blast walls to topple a guard tower, said Lal Mohammad Ahmadzai, a police spokesperson for the northern region.

The topic of Quran burning stirred outrage among millions of Muslims and others worldwide after the Rev. Terry Jones’s small church, Dove Outreach Center, threatened to destroy a copy of the holy book last year. The Florida pastor had backed down but the church went through with the burning last month.

Afghans carry a man who was wounded in an attack on the UN's office in Mazar-i-Sharif, north of Kabul.

The governor of Balkh province said insurgents had used the march as cover to attack the compound, in a battle that raged for several hours and raised serious questions about plans to make the city a pilot for security transfer to national forces.

“The insurgents have taken advantage of the situation to attack the UN compound,” said governor Ata Mohammad Noor.

He told a news conference that many in the crowd of protesters had been carrying guns. About 27 people have already been detained over the attack, he added.

Afghan police and army, who the UN rely on for their first line of defence, were apparently unable to control the crowd. German troops are also stationed in Balkh and the Nato-led coalition said they had received a request for help.

US President Barack Obama condemned a US pastor's burning of the Quran as an act of 'extreme intolerance and bigotry'.

Barack Obama on Saturday condemned a US pastor's burning of the Quran, after violent protests at what he called an act of 'extreme intolerance and bigotry' left 17 dead in Afghanistan.

Mr Obama also reiterated his condemnation of the 'outrageous' attacks by protesters as 'an affront to human decency and dignity.' 'No religion tolerates the slaughter and beheading of innocent people, and there is no justification for such a dishonorable and deplorable act,' he added.

Ten people died amid fresh protests that began in the center of the main southern city of Kandahar and spread as police clashed with crowds on Saturday, a day after seven UN staff were killed in the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif, the worst attack on the world body in the country since the 2001 invasion.

'The desecration of any holy text, including the Quran, is an act of extreme intolerance and bigotry,' Mr Obama said in a statement honouring those killed in the attacks.

Kandahar is the spiritual heartland of the Taleban, who have fought an insurgency against President Hamid Karzai's government in Kabul and its Western allies since they were ousted by the US-led invasion.

'Death to America' and 'Death to Karzai' chanted the demonstrators. 'They have insulted our Quran,' shouted one. Police had fired into the air to try to deter thousands of protesters marching toward the UN offices and provincial administration headquarters.
