U.S. President, Barack Obama, has announced that Al Qaeda leader, Osama bin Laden, has been killed in a firefight with US forces in Pakistan and his body is in US custody. The founder and leader of Al-Qaeda has been at the top of the US most wanted list for being behind a number of atrocities.
The US used facial recognition techniques to help identify Osama bin Laden, and is now conducting DNA testing. Bin Laden was identified by the assault force that killed him. He resisted and was shot in the head. A US official says results of the DNA tests should be available in the next few days.
2011, ten years after the deadly September 11th attacks on New York and Washington, Osama bin Laden is dead.
"Justice has been done," President Obama announced in a dramatic, late-night White House speech.
Obama said US forces led the joint operation with Pakistan. No Americans were killed and they took care to avoid civilian casualties.
It's a major accomplishment for the president and his national security team, after many Americans had given up hope of ever finding bin Laden.
A crowd gathered outside the White House to celebrate.
George W. Bush, who was president at the time of the September 11th attacks, called the death of the al Qaeda leader a "momentous achievement."
Bin Laden was killed in the Pakistani town of Abbotabad.
Having the body may help convince any doubters.
Bin Laden had been the subject of a search since he eluded US soldiers and Afghan militia forces in a large-scale assault on the Tora Bora mountains of Afghanistan in 2001.
The trail quickly went cold and many intelligence officials believed he had been hiding in Pakistan.
