A nurse at the Pingliang Hospital in Pingliang city, Northwest China's Gansu province, puts an intravenous drip into a toddler who is suffering from food poisoning, on Friday.
Melamine contaminated milk in 2008
In 2008, at least six children died and nearly 300,000 fell ill from powdered milk laced with melamine, an industrial chemical added to low quality or diluted milk to make such products seem to contain larger amounts of protein than they really do.
The scandal broke on 16 July, after sixteen infants in Gansu Province, who had been fed on milk powder produced by Shijiazhuang-based Sanlu Group, were diagnosed with kidney stones. After the initial focus on Sanlu - market leader in the budget segment - government inspections revealed the problem existed to a lesser degree in products from 21 other companies.
By November 2008, China reported an estimated 300,000 victims, with six infants dying from kidney stones and other kidney damage, and a further 860 babies hospitalised. The chemical appeared to have been added to milk to cause it to appear to have a higher protein content. In a separate incident four years before, watered-down milk had resulted in 13 infant deaths from malnutrition.
Following the notorious scandal, dairy product imports surged fivefold, from 120,000 tons in 2008 to 600,000 tons in 2009. The case has seriously eroded consumer confidence in domestic dairy products.

Tainted milk kills 3 kids, sickens 35
Three babies died and 35 other people, mostly children, were left ill in a Northwest China city by an outbreak of food poisoning believed to be linked to tainted milk, the local government said on Friday.
A preliminary investigation showed victims in Pingliang city, Northwest China's Gansu province, suffered from nitrite poisoning after drinking milk, a local government statement said.
Nitrite is a chemical used to make dyes and to preserve meats.

It would be sad to see parents travel far in the future to find safe milk for their children. It would be sadder if this problem continues to plague mainland bulk buyers.
We can only hope that dairy product makers, quality watchdogs and market regulators no longer think that solving the problem is others' business. If they choose to look the other way, like before, the already unfolding credibility crisis of the domestic dairy industry and the authorities will only deepen.
