1.     prefer v.（preferred;preferring）更喜爱，更喜欢

prefer sth to sth 选择某物而不选择它物

prefer doing sth to doing sth 宁愿干某事而不愿干某事

prefer sth/to do sth rather than sth/to do sth

prefer to do sth/ prefer doing sth 更喜欢干某事

e.g: 1) Which doyou like better, coffee or tea?

   = which do you prefer, coffee or tea?

    2) He would rather stay at home than goshopping.

  = He prefers staying at home to goingshopping.

  = He prefers to stay at home rather than togoing shopping.

5. heart n. 心 ，内心

  learn/know sth by heart 记住……

6.sink v. (sank,sunk) 下沉 = godown

  e.g: Wood does not sink in water.

7.latest adj. 最近的 = the most recent

  e.g:1) She always dressed in the latestfashion.她总是穿着最时髦的时装.

     2) His latest novel is a great success. 他新近出版的小说很成功.

 [注: the last可指一系列事物中的最后一个:

     The last bus leaves at 11:30 am.

            也可指在谈及的事物的上一个:

8. entertain v.宴客 使人快乐

  e.g:1) I don’t entertain very often.我不常在家请客.

     2) They do a lot of entertaining .他们时常设宴待客.

     3) He entertained us for hours with hisstories and and jokes.

       他给我们讲故事,说笑话,让我们高兴了好几个小时.

10.display v.( = put sth on show)＆n. 陈列 展览

   Thepainting has been displayed to the public.

   这画已公开展出.

   On display ( being displayed ) = on show

   This kind of TV is on display( on show).

11.interest v. 使…….感兴趣

  This story doesn’t interest me.

   Interest sb in sth 使某人对……感兴趣

  interest n. 兴趣

  He has a great interest in drawing.

  This is the place of great interest inSichuan.

12.whatever pron.

  1) any or evry

   e.g: You can eat whatever you like.你想吃什么就吃什么.

       Whatever I have is yours.我的东西都是你的.

  2) no matter what 无论什么(用于引导让步状语从句)

   Whatever happens, don’t be afraid.

   = No matter what happens, don’t be afraid.

   Whatever difficulties you have,you shouldnot give up.

   = No matter what difficulties you have,youshould not give up.

       2）对某人方便，合某人心意

14.expect v.预计，预料；期盼；要求；猜想

  1）I expect Iwill be back on Sunday.

     We expected him to arrive yesterday.

  2) I was expecting a present from her,so Iwas very sad I didn’t receive one.

    Don’t expect anything from me.

  3) I expect you to be on time.

    You will be expected to work on Sunday.

  4) who has eaten all the cakes? Iexpect(suppose) it was Tom.
