Greetings from Beijing! Or should I say, from the Great Wall of China. This is Dylan Locke, son of the U.S. Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, and this latest Sunday we took a little excursion out of the heart of the city of Beijing, and into one of the numerous towns surrounding parts of the Great Wall. Despite the multi- hour drive, we arrived at the base of the (small) mountains where the Great Wall was located, full of energy and excitement for our upcoming little hike. We got the tickets, got in line for the chairlift to take us up, and we were off! For those undaunted by heights, the short trip up the mountain was fine, but for those somewhat unnerved of heights, namely my older sister, it wasn’t the best part of the trip.

Roughly 5 minutes on the lift, and we were there! The Great Wall itself! By then, the lift effects were wearing off, and we were once again ready for our hike. Little did we know about the mosquitoes (I miraculously wasn’t bitten, I wonder why), and right off the bat they were onto us! However, we managed to get a few (or more than a few) photos, and we soon became weary of them, even though the background for the pictures only got better and better. Passing through a couple more towers, and we all succumbed to fatigue. The youngest of our group, Madeline, was the first to grow weary. Despite becoming tired myself, my sister Emily and I trekked on three more towers before heading back. At this point, we headed to the toboggan track for our descending of the mountain. We waited in line for about an hour (it was a Sunday, so naturally the lines were long) before getting on our toboggans, and we shot down the almost- mile- long track to the bottom. I, being the natural photographer/videographer, wanted to get a video of the ride, but the people didn’t want me filming it. I wonder why. In conclusion: Bring bug spray and a LOT of water next time you go on the Great Wall.
