World-renowned burlesque dancer Dita Von Teese is a fashion icon, frequently appearing on best-dressed lists in fashion magazines around the world.


She had been spotted getting all dressed up, not just for black tie parties but even for casual shopping trips, and is famous for never using a stylist and always creating her own looks.


Talk about taking care of your appearance.


While it might seem a little much to doll up all the time, Dita Von Teese, whose real name is Heather Renee Sweet, believed that it is just bad manners to dress sloppily.


"I view it as a courtesy to other people to look nice!


"I would encourage anyone who always dresses sloppy to take a moment to care for yourself, in order to boost confidence, have self-respect, and likely have an all-around better day by seeing how much easier it is to get what you want!" said the sultry 38-year-old.


Apart from making sure she looks her best, Dita Von Teese, who will be visiting Singapore in October as the brand ambassador for Cointreau, a French liquor brand, also takes her art very seriously.


The Michigan native invests much of her income into improving her burlesque shows, which sees her effortlessly stripping off her clothing and going nearly nude, in carefully choreographed routines designed to both entertain and titillate.


"I have always invested a lot of my income on my stage props and costumes.


"As for my costumes, they cost between US$30,000-$60,000 (about S$38,000 - S$77,000) each, and take a year or so to make," said Dita Von Teese.


Surprisingly, she does not spend much on street clothes for day-to-day wear.


"I usually invest in street clothes in the fall when designers are making clothes that I love.


"I am a very careful, thoughtful shopper, I do not shop on a whim," said the jet-setting burlesque star, who has performed at various venues around the world.


And what item of clothing does this fashion icon never leave home without?


"A fabulous coat is an essential. I always invest in a very fine coat," she said.


Dita Von Teese will be performing her burlesque show on October 21 at Zirca for invited guests.
