Scientists claim that recovering alcoholics still struggle to keep their balance for years after giving up the bottle.A U.S. study revealed that heavy drinking has a major impact on coordination for years.

Researchers found that alcoholics who had only recently given up struggled to walk straight along a line or stand heel to toe with their arms folded for a minute with their eyes closed in tests, LiveScience.com reported.Although it is little surprise that alcoholics struggled with the tasks, those who had given up the bottle also struggled with them.

The team at the Neurobehavioural Research unit in Honolulu, Hawaii, analysed the balance and gait of 200 volunteers. The 70 volunteers who had only recently given up drinking in the previous 15 weeks performed the worst. However, 52 who had never been alcoholics carried out the tasks a lot better than those who were had given up drinking years ago.

Dr George Fein, who led the investigation, said that recovering addicts never got their balance back totally.‘There's an 80 to 90 percent recovery, but there's still some residual effects,’ the senior scientist told LiveScience.com.

The findings have been published in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research.

Previously, it was thought that balance problems disappeared soon after heavy drinkers gave up the bottle.Dr Kevin Hill, a psychiatrist who works at an alcohol treatment centre in Belmont, Massachusetts, said that alcoholism is a chronic illness.‘A lot of people don't think about addictions as chronic medical illnesses,’ he told LiveScience.‘Just as a person with diabetes might ultimately develop loss of sensation and feeling in extremities, people with alcohol addiction might permanently lose balance and coordination.’

The study found that as the years went by problems with balance begun to diminish. However, there was a lasting effect.
