Four people were sentenced to death and two received prison terms of 19 years Tuesday for plotting and participating in two major terrorist attacks that left 17 people dead in Northwest China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

Both the intermediate people's courts of Hotan and Kashi handed down the sentences after convicting the six perpetrators of organizing and participating in terrorists groups, illegally producing explosives, homicide and arson.

Those charged confessed their crimes in court, according to Xinjiang Legal Report newspaper.

Hotan intermediate people's court said in the verdict that Abuduaini, one of the perpetrators who was sentenced to death, had trained several people including two convicted in Hotan and Urumqi from May 2010 to July 2011, forming a terrorist group.

Carrying an axe, hacking knives and explosives, it said that Abuduaini and his followers attacked Na'erbage police station in Hotan on July 18, leaving four people dead, including an armed police officer, a security guard and two hostages.

The group smashed and burned properties around the police station, causing economic losses of 367,760 yuan ($57,000), according to the verdict.

Kashi intermediate people's court said that on July 30, Abulikemu and another perpetrator who was shot dead intercepted a vehicle and killed the driver.

The two then went on to kill eight people on a food street in the city of Kashi.

It said that another convicted felon drove an electric car loaded with explosives to Xiangxie Street with five people the next day, where they killed five people and injured 10 passersby and three police, and causing economic losses of 187,008 yuan ($29,000).
