China, Bulgaria Seek to Strengthen Ties

The vice chairman of China's central military commission, Gen. Xu Caihou, wrapped up a three-day visit to Bulgaria on Sept. 8 that focused on strengthening military and economic ties.

Defense cooperation, military modernization, training and education were on the agenda during Xu's meetings with Defense Minister Anyu Angelov and President Georgy Parvanov on Sept. 7 and 8.

The Chinese general also visited Bulgaria's military academy in Sofia and a nearby army training ground.

"Defense cooperation between our two countries has strengthened over the last years and China became an important partner of ours in the Asia region," Angelov said.

The two said they would seek new opportunities for cooperation in military technology and production and agreed to learn from each other's experiences in disaster response.

Parvanov had meanwhile expressed hopes on Sept. 7 that Xu's visit would "turn into a strong catalyser for further developing cooperation in all areas."

Parvanov highlighted the huge potential in boosting trade and expressed hopes for more Chinese investment in Bulgaria.

China's largest sports utility vehicle producer, Great Wall Motor, is scheduled to launch this autumn a plant in the central Bulgarian town of Lovech, which will produce 50,000 vehicles per year.

The Bulgarian president also reiterated an invitation for Chinese President Hu Jintao to visit Bulgaria.
