Lisa and Evan both work for a large company. Recently a new manager was hired for a position they both wanted. Listen as they discuss their feelings about being passed over and try to remain optimistic.
Lisa: Did you hear the news about Bob Spence getting the management job?
Evan: Yeah. I just heard. It’s a bit hard to swallow, isn’t it?
Lisa: That’s exactly what I was thinking. It just isn’t fair! I really can’t believe it.
Evan: Me neither. I thought for sure that you or I would get it.
Lisa: Me, too. What qualifications does he have that you or I don’t? Besides, we’ve both worked here longer. We could both do that job in our sleep. I’m so angry!
Evan: I know how you feel. I don’t think it’s going to be very good for our morale either.
Lisa: That’s for sure. It’s going to be difficult to get used to.
Evan: What do you know about Bob? Is he a nice guy? Have you heard anything about him?
Lisa: Actually, I don’t know anything about him. I’d like to think he’s highly skilled. That would at least be some consolation.
Evan: Well, if he isn’t, the job might be available again soon.
Lisa: Which probably means that either you or I would be next in line.
Evan: I don’t know about that – that’s what we thought before, and Bob’s appointment caught us both by surprise.
Lisa: True. I suppose we really should give him the benefit of the doubt, however. Who knows – maybe the president sees something in him that we don’t.
Evan: That’s possible, but I’d still like to think it was just luck.
Lisa: Even so, people sometimes grow into their jobs. You never know – he might turn out to be a great manager.
Evan: Yes, but I’m going to keep my fingers crossed anyway.
