Love at first sight just sex and ego
Their eyes met across a crowded room. The party chatter ebbed away,and the music slowed. That first lovers' glaze is the staple of theromantic novelist, and scientists believe they have now revealed thetrue nature of its true attractive power.
According to new research, romance has very little do to with it. That "look" is all about sex and ego.
"It does seem to be a sort of narcissistic thing. People areattracted to people who are attracted to them," said Ben Jones in theFace Research Laboratory at the University of Aberdeen.
"It's really a very basic effect that we are all, at some level atleast, aware of - which is that if you smile at people and you maintaineye contact, it makes you more attractive."
The team put together four different sets of digital images - womenlooking happy, women looking disgusted, men looking happy and menlooking disgusted. In each case, the scientists made up pairs of imageswhich were identical except that in one the person was looking directlyat the camera and in the other their gaze was averted. Volunteers thenrated the relative attractiveness of the images in each pair.
The team found that a direct stare is attractive only if the persongiving it looks as if they like you. This preference was even higher ifthe face in the picture was of the opposite sex.

英国阿伯丁大学面部表情研究实验室的本·琼斯说：“看来这的确是一种自恋情绪。被别人吸引的人往往是对别人也有意思的人。”他说：“如何吸引他人的社交信号对你而言实际上是非常重要的。吸引你的人是被你吸引的人，这表明吸引力涉及的不仅是外表美。”
研究人员将四组不同的数码图像放在一起——表情幸福的妇女、看上去不高兴的妇女、表情快乐的男子、看上去令人厌恶的男子。每一次，科学家都将同样表情的照片放在一起，只是在其中的一张中，图中的人目光直视镜头，而另一张则目光转移了。志愿者对每一对照片的吸引力进行评估。结果，该小组发现，只有当这个人的目光看上去像是喜欢上你的时候，直视才具有吸引力。如果图中的人是异性的话，吸引力甚至会高得多。
