It could be said that former First Lady EleanorRoosevelt's strength was born out of her husband's weaknesses:first, after she discovered an extra-marital affair early in theirmarriage, she resolved to live on her own terms — not merely as anaccessory to her powerful husband. Later, as first lady, Eleanortook 'fact-finding' trips for her less-mobile husband, who lost theuse of his legs after contracting polio in 1921. She spoke fiercelyand freely about racism, poverty and sexism in a way that wouldhave been impossible for a sitting president at the time. "You gainstrength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which youreally stop to look fear in the face," she oncesaid.

There she met her future husband, musician andconsummate rake Johnny Cash. It was not until 1968, however, thatthe pair married; before then, Carter Cash was married twice, won aGrammy (with Cash) and then somehow managed to tame the notoriousdrug addict and womanizer. In addition to recording severalsuccessful duets with her newly-clean husband, she also co-wrote"Ring of Fire," one of Cash's biggest hits.

The Rani of Jhansi

Born into a well-established, noble family in 19thcentury western India, the woman who was to become the Rani (or"Queen") of Jhansi happened to already be skilled in the warriorarts at an early age. Ill-luck struck soon after marrying the Rajaof the principality of Jhansi — their son died, quickly followed byher husband. Then, in 1853, citing a lack of heirs, the BritishEast India Company annexed the territory as its own. But four yearslater, Jhansi became swept up in a widespread, bloody rebellionagainst East India Company rule. The Rani, also known asLakshmibai, eventually joined in, and won a few stunning battles.She perished, according to lore, while fighting the British onhorseback in full armored splendor. She was only 22. Her legendlives on in statues and Indian school books to thisday.
