Mexican state-run Pemex is working to issue an international tender to lease eight offshore jackup drilling rigs in a $1.2 billion effort to maintain oil and gas production in the Gulf of Mexico’s Bay of Campeche.

Pemex plans to use the offshore rigs to drill, complete, maintain, repair and collect data from subsea wells on the aging Ku-Maloob-Zaap and Cantarell oil fields.

Seven of the jackups are independent-leg cantilevers capable of working in waters up to 105 meters (344 feet) deep and drilling up to a total depth of 7,600 meters. Additionally the other jackup will be able to drill to the same depth, but only able to work in waters up to 90 meters (295 feet) deep.

Five of the rigs will be working on the Ku-Maloob-Zaap field; two will work on the Cantarell field and another will work on wells in both the Ek Balam and Ku-Maloob Zaap fields.

Three of the offshore rigs will begin operations in September, with the contracts running through 2014. Two of the facilities will begin work in October, working for 1,400 days. Another rig will start in December, and the other two will start work in February and March of 2012, finishing their contracts in 2015 and 2016.

Additionally, Pemex is hiring five onshore rigs to work in the South of the country in a contract worth $200 million.
