The People's Daily, the flagship newspaper of the Communist Party of China (CPC), touted the Party's leadership in Tibet in the past six decades, calling for a more brilliant future in the Himalayan region.

History has proved with facts that without the CPC, there would be no new Tibet, said an editorial to be published by the newspaper on Tuesday.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the peaceful liberation of Tibet. The Chinese central government and Tibet's local government signed a 17-article agreement in 1951 to allow the People's Liberation Army to enter Lhasa peacefully.

The Tibet Autonomous Region, however, was founded later on Sept. 9, 1965.

In the past 60 years, serfs and slaves, which made up more than 95 percent of Tibet's population, thoroughly departed from feudal serfdom and became masters of their country and society, the editorial said.

Religious freedom has been fully respected and protected, and the environment has been carefully preserved in the past six decades, which makes Tibet one of the regions that has the best ecological environment in the world, it said.

Only by the CPC's leadership, socialist system and regional autonomy of ethnic minorities, could Tibet have reached such a prosperous present and a brighter future, the editorial said.

The article also called on the people to carry out a deepened struggle against the secessionist clique headed by the Dalai Lama, who fled Tibet in 1959 after a failed military rebellion.
