Tourists wait at the southeast gate of Peking University on Thursday, July 14, 2011.
Peking University's recent restrictions on tourists during the summer vacation, which allowed only 5,000 tourists to visit the campus each day, have aroused discontent, the Beijing News reported Friday.
A father surnamed Yang along with his son from Jinan, east China's Shandong province were stopped by a security guard as they reached the east gate of Peking University around 12am Thursday. They were told to queue up at anther designated gate for tourists and wait to enter with valid ID.
The father and son joined a long queue of more than 200 people, waiting to enter at the southeast gate of Peking University. Four security guards stood at the gate, registering tourists and checking their IDs.
The security department of Peking University indicated that such restrictions are carried out to maintain the order of the campus during the summer vacation. Restrictions allow for 3,000 people from tourist groups, who are required to make reservations in advance, to enter through east gate, and 2,000 individual tourists who can enter with valid IDs via the southeast or west gates.
A tour guide surnamed Zhang from Changsha, central China's Hunan province said that she had not been informed of the restrictions, and had therefore not made the required reservations. She was forced into having to ask her group members to wait in line and enter as individual tourists.
Most tourists interviewed also disagreed with the restriction on tourist numbers, stating that it puts the University's reputation in question, especially as the institution is supposed to be open to the public.
The deputy director of the security department, surnamed Xing, said restrictions will be removed once the peak season for tourism ends, around the middle of August. Following this, tourists will be able to freely enter the campus upon showing their ID.
Elsewhere, Peking University's counterpart, Tsinghua University, has also adopted restrictions upon tourists following its 100-year anniversary at the end of April. Regulations there state that the campus is only open to tourists from 8:30am to 4:30pm on weekends, national holidays, summer and winter vacations. It is said several hundred tourists were prevented from entering Tsinghua University Thursday, as its summer vacation will start from July 18th.
In summer vacation, it is right time for students beyond Beijing to visit the dreamed universities. As the two top-notched universities in China, Tsinghua university and Peking university, should you be open-minded and let the students in?
