Fires resulted in 1,108 deaths in 2010: Ministry of Public Security
Fires killed 1,108 people, injured 573 others and caused 1.77 billion yuan (273 million U.S.dollars) in direct economic losses in 2010, according to figures released by the Ministry of Public Security.
The ministry said that 65 fires that occurred in 2010 resulted in three to nine deaths and economic losses of 10 to 50 million yuan. Four fires that occurred in 2010 incurred death tolls between 10 and 29 and economic losses of 50 to 100 million yuan, according to the ministry.
About 30.7 percent of last year's fires were caused by electrical failures, the ministry said.
A high-rise building fire in Shanghai that left 58 people dead and 71 others injured in 2010 was not included in the statistics, but was classified as a "production-related accident," the ministry said
Firefighters were dispatched on 589,000 emergency calls last year, which included providing emergency relief in addition to fighting fires, the ministry said.
Seven firefighters died during emergency calls in 2010, according to the ministry.
