Senior Chinese leader Jia Qinglin Thursday called for concerted efforts from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan to further expand and deepen exchanges and cooperation.
Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, the country's top political advisory body, made the remarks while meeting with Jason Hu, mayor of Taiwan's Taichung City.
Thriving cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation at city and county levels in recent years conform to the trend of peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, accord with local economic and cultural development and have brought real benefits to people of both sides, said Jia, also a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee.
Jia stressed that both sides should work together to ensure a peaceful and stable environment for and maintain the momentum of peaceful development of cross-Strait relations.
Jason Hu said that Taichung has been benefiting from the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA), which has yielded remarkable results since its implementation.
People from both sides have embraced a new way of communication since mainlanders started to visit Taiwan as individual tourists on June 28, Hu added.
In addition, Wang Yi, director of the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office, said exchanges at the city and county levels have contributed to grassroots interaction and mutual understanding between people across the Taiwan Strait.
