Chinese top political advisor Jia Qinglin has called for more efforts to boost the development of a central mountainous region as he wraps up a five-day inspection tour in the area Saturday.

Efforts should be made to build infrastructure and improve people's living standards, Jia said during his tour to the Wuyishan Mountainous Region, which consists part of central China's provinces of Guizhou and Hunan as well as Chongqing municipality.

He urged local authorities to put more emphasis on the development of industries with regional characteristics and strengthen environmental protection.

During his tour, Jia visited villages inhabited by ethnic minorities, urban communities as well as higher institutions.

He called for unswerving efforts to promote ethnic unity and ensure ethnic minorities benefit from the country's economic development.

Social management should be strengthened and innovated to ensure minorities' legitimate interests are protected, he said.
