The European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek on Tuesday stated that he opposes Palestinian plans to seek membership in the United Nations in September.

In a news conference with Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad in the West Bank, Buzek said that going to the UN without an agreement with Israel will be "unilateral, not helpful and dangerous" decision.

The Palestinians decided to seek recognition from the UN General Assembly after U.S.-brokered peace talks stopped last year. The Palestinians walked out of the negotiations, protesting the resumption of Jewish settlement construction in the West Bank.

"Such a decision could be helpful only if done through negotiations," Buzek added, calling on Israel and the Palestinians to resume the negotiations.

Fayyad responded that the Palestinian efforts aim at ending the Israeli occupation that started in 1967 and establishing a Palestinian state in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip with its capital in East Jerusalem.

Meanwhile, Buzek welcomed the reconciliation agreement that Egypt brokered between Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah party and Islamic Hamas movement, which doesn't recognize Israel.

He welcomed the subsequent unity government that will be formed according to the agreement, but only when it meets international demands of renouncing violence and recognizing Israel.
