Carey Mulligan was 25 years old when she got hers; Sienna Miller was 26; Emma Watson, however, was just turning 21 on the day that American Vogue interviewed her for the scoop to accompany her first cover.

The over-achieving British actress - who continues to carve out a name for herself as something of a style icon - graces the July issue of the American style bible, headed up by no-nonsense editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, ahead of the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 .

Photographed by Mario Testino in sophisticated creations by designers Tom Ford, Alexander McQueen, Prada, Calvin Klein and Dolce & Gabbana, her gamine looks and flawless skin are accentuated by a slick hairstyle, which was scraped back for the shoot.

In the interview, the former face of Burberry talks about her deliberate championing of emerging designers such as Erdem and Hakaan (the latter of which was the creator of the revealing minidress she wore to collect her 'Style Icon' trophy at this year's Elle Style Awards): "I thought: "If people are going to write about what I'm wearing, then I would wear young British designers who need the publicity."

Watson, who has been signed up by French cosmetics giant Lancôme to front its Trésor Midnight Rose fragrance advertising campaign, also spoke of her love of make-up, which is rooted in the many hours spent in the Harry Potter make-up trailer: "That was my playground. I would sit and play with lipsticks, foundations, and eye shadows; and every now and then Amanda [Knight] would let me do the extras' face paint for the Quidditch matches."

So, what's next for this unstoppable force? She's currently filming The Perks of Being a Wallflower , in which she plays hard-partying Samantha, who is a million miles removed from the wholesome Hermione of Harry Potter, which made Watson a household name and a multi-millionaire.
