U.S. private-sector employment saw constant but quite slower growth in May, signaling the labor market recovery is still fragile, said the National Employment Report released Wednesday by Automatic Data Processing, Inc. (ADP).
The ADP said that private-sector jobs increased by 38,000 from April to May on a seasonally adjusted basis, the smallest increase since last September. Meanwhile, the estimated change of employment from March to April was revised down slightly to 177, 000.
The fresh report suggested that employment growth slowed sharply in May and was much weaker than the average level of the past several months.
The job improvement in May was reflected in small businesses and medium businesses, adding 27,000 and 30,000 respectively. However, jobs among large businesses decreased by 19,000.
The employment in the service-providing sector rose by 48,000 in May, marking 17th consecutive months of employment gains. But jobs in the goods-producing sector dropped 10,000 following six months of increases. In addition, manufacturing employment also fell 9,000 following seven straight monthly gains, according to the report.
A deceleration in employment, while disappointing, was not entirely surprising, as the U.S. economy grew at only a 1.8 percent rate in the first quarter, said the ADP.
The ADP National Employment Report, created by Automatic Data Processing, Inc., in partnership with Macroeconomic Advisers, LLC, is derived from actual payroll data and measures the change in total nonfarm private employment each month.
