A cultural bridge bringing peoples together (Interview)

----Exclusive interview with Prof. Peter J. Buckley, Director of Center for International Business, University of Leeds

Cultural communication is increasingly viewed as a gateway to deepening mutual understanding and enhancing goodwill between peoples.

People Forum (English) had an interview Monday with Professor Peter J. Buckley, Director of Center for International Business, University of Leeds, talking about the mission of the University, the global tendency of commercializing education and the top-class university in his eyes.

Talking about the mission of University of Leeds, Professor Buckley said that there are three main ones ----To conduct high-level research; To convert the research to teaching; To provide useful knowledge for society.

Although the Britain government cut its education budget, many British students may have to drop school, professor Buckley does not think universities in Britain will recruit rich students from other countries as a way to ensure its smooth run. Furthermore, Leeds University has offered scholarships to those who excel but have difficulty balancing the situation.

When asked about his evaluation about Chinese students in Leeds, he said that traditional Chinese teaching makes Chinese students good at repeating things but not necessarily good at interaction. Since many students come from different countries, in a mix group, Chinese students will have more opportunities to communicate with others and get improvement.

Referring to world's first class university, professor said that Leeds has the ambition to be among the top 50 around the world. Different universities have different goals. Even in the leading and comprehensive universities, not all the courses on offer are the best.

So it is hard to judge objectively whether a university is the top-notched one. He also referred to China's Tsinghua University, which has just marked its 100th anniversary, saying that he has noticed that China's Tsinghua University invested a lot to improve its facilities and better its research and it will take quite a short time to be definitely world-class competitive. He also mentioned that rankings are not necessarily the major thing, what's more impotant is the super goal of the university.

When asked about his opinion about Chinese students' craze about the MBA study or business- related courses, Prof. Buckley said that it is an effective way to get internationally recognized and also helpful for them in the job market.

The University of Leeds (informally Leeds University, or simply Leeds) is a British Redbrick university located in the city of Leeds, West Yorkshire, England.

Leeds University Business School is regarded as one of the best in the UK (currently ranking 5th for Accounting and Finance, 12th for Business Studies and 16th for Economics), and the Leeds MBA also enjoys a high ranking in the field both within UK and globally.
