The celebrations began in Barcelona almost as soon as the referee blew the final whistle to confirm FC Barcelona as European Champions following their 3-1 win in the final of the Champions League against Manchester United at Wembley on Saturday.

Goals from Pedro Rodriguez, Leo Messi and David Villa gave Barcelona the fourth European Cup in their history and the third in the last five years to confirm them as the best team on the continent.

35,000 Barcelona fans, who were unable to make the trip at Wembley, watched the game on a giant screen mounted next to the city's Arc de Triumph and began celebrating as soon as the game ended.

Meanwhile thousands more began to congregate at the traditional meeting point for Barca fans, the Fuente de Caneletas at the top of the famous Las Ramblas.

The press wasted no time in praising the achievements of the side coached by Pep Guardiola.
