French President Nicolas Sarkozy announced a $40-billion aid package for Egypt and Tunisia at the end of the G8 summit on Friday as the club of economic powers joined a race against time to shore up the gains of the Arab changes.

FRESH NATO air strikes on the Libyan capital Tripoli overnight have targeted the district where leader Muammar Gaddafi has his residence.

A powerful explosion rocked the Bab Al-Aziziya district, not far from the city centre, at around 1am (9am AEST), followed by another a few minutes later.

It was the the fourth night in a row that this part of the city has been targeted with air strikes.
